Units 1 & 2 VCE English Language Program

book free trial

Our Units 1 & 2 Program aims to provide students with a strong foundation for Units 3 & 4 Eng Lang

During Units 1 and 2, VCE English Language can sometimes feel like a “chill” subject, which can lead students to underestimate the jump in difficulty when they reach Units 3 and 4. At the end of Term 1 2025, several U3/4 students came to me for enrolment after their first SAC because they didn’t perform to their expectations. One of the biggest challenges? The transition from Units 1/2 to 3/4—even students who received the English Language Subject Award at their school in Units U1/2 have found the leap tricky! ⚠️

That’s where my Unit 1 & 2 EL Accelerated Program becomes particularly helpful. While certain topics in Units 1 & 2—such as Child Language Acquisition—are interesting, in my program, I focus on the skills and concepts that are most important & relevant for success in Units 3 & 4. I emphasize ensuring students understand key concepts and structures in relation to Metalanguage, SAQ, Analytical Commentary (AC), and Essay✍️, building a strong foundation that makes the transition to U3/4 smoother and less stressful. These are areas that many students say they wish they had been better prepared for before starting Units 3 & 4.

The results speak for themselves. Many students who began tutoring with me in Units 1/2 in 2024 and are now in Units 3/4 in 2025 are averaging an A+ in their SACs, consistently sharing how valuable their head start was!

My current Year 11 students (2025) are also excelling in their assessments, with many crediting the Accelerated Program. They are already writing beyond the expected standard for Year 11, enjoying lessons that are directly relevant to Units 3 & 4, and receiving constructive feedback that prepares them for future SACs 💬.

Students are also realizing the importance of starting VCE English Language tutoring early—it’s one of the most important VCE subjects (English is always in the Top 4 for ATAR) 🏅.

How Jason’s U12 Eng Lang program prepares you for U34

  • Focus on the Units 1 & 2 content that is relevant for Units 3 & 4: Jason prioritises teaching the skills and concepts that matter most for success in Units 3 & 4, including Metalanguage, Short Answer Questions (SAQ), Analytical Commentary (AC), and Essay writing, enabling students to build a solid foundation.

  • Think and write like a VCE English Language student from Day One: VCE English Language is a very different subject from students’ prior Years 7 - 10 English studies, so I focus on developing the intuition and habits students need for success. From the start, students learn to approach tasks the way VCAA examiners expect, such as consistently using metalanguage when quoting examples, thinking analytically about language, and structuring responses specifically. These habits ensure students are confident and prepared as they progress into Units 3 & 4.

  • Develop mastery through guided practice and early exposure: Students gain early exposure and tailored guidance across all three SAC & Exam sections (Short Answer Questions, Analytical Commentary, and Essay), allowing them to apply their learning and build mastery before Units 3 & 4 begin. To support this, Jason teaches proven structures and approaches that have helped past students achieve raw 45+ scores—including raw 50s and even the Premier’s Award—and provides model writings to demonstrate what high-scoring responses look like.

  • Gain a head start on the Units 3 & 4 course: By focusing on the Units 1 & 2 contents that are most relevant for Units 3 & 4, students build a strong foundation. Once this is complete, we seamlessly transition into Unit 3 & 4 content, ensuring they are fully prepared for Units 3 & 4 Eng Lang, which is arguably the most important VCE subject (always in the Top 4 for ATAR) 🏅.

  • Overcome learning gaps when starting Units 3 & 4: Without effective guidance, students often enter Units 3 & 4 and discover gaps in their understanding, feeling under-prepared and overwhelmed. This can cause stress for students and concern for parents as valuable time is lost trying to catch up. Jason’s English Language U1/2 program addresses these gaps early, giving students the confidence and preparation they need to thrive in Units 3 & 4.

The Eng Lang Study Design has recently changed

With the implementation of the NEW 2024 – 2028 VCAA Study Design, the VCE Eng Lang course is significantly different from what it was before. And as just the third cohort of students undertaking the new syllabus, there will understandably be a degree of uncertainty as you try to figure out the new requirements. So, you may be feeling uncertain as to (1) what has changed? (2) Will there be enough resources provided by my school? (3) How will it affect me? …

That’s where I come in! My role is to completely eliminate those uncertainties and provide you with the certainty and confidence to excel in the new Eng Lang course. I have invested countless hours redesigning my course material to ensure it is aligned and updated to the NEW 2024 – 2028 Study Design. This includes, but is not limited to: lesson booklets, quote banks, media examples, and metalanguage bank. As such, I am well-equipped and familiar with every aspect of the change, whether that be new metalanguage terms or new linguistic theory, and am more than ready and capable to help you succeed with the new curriculum.

In fact, since graduating from UniMelb in June 2023, I have been tutoring full time and will continue to in 2026 (no other commitments) which means the amount of time, resource and energy I have been investing in perfecting the new course curriculum is unmatched by other tutors, who - with all due respect, may have University exams as their first priority to worry about. Let’s face it — with the amount of hard work that is required to get into courses like Medicine/Dentistry/Engineering/Commerce, it’s likely they will be prioritising their University exams over tutoring, which coincides with your VCE exam period. → How will that impact you?

This is one of the many reasons that sets me apart from other EL tutors: I do not treat Eng Lang tutoring as a “side hustle”, and unlike other tutors, I do not ‘ghost’ students during the VCE exam time period because of University exams (remember: they take place during the same period as VCE exams). You have my full and undivided attention, and I am fully invested in your success. The choice is clear.

It is quite risky choosing a tutor who hasn’t invested the same amount of time and resources as I have to create, adjust, and update the learning resources to ensure they stay relevant to the new curriculum. I have heard of stories from my students who told me some of their classmates’ tutors are still using terms from the old study design, AND not even realising it! And with English Language being the most important subject in your VCE (always in the top 4 regardless of the score), it’s even more critical to choose a tutor who is fully invested in your success, and not someone who is merely treating tutoring as a ‘side hustle’.

My ability to tailor the tutoring program to align with the latest Study Design is reflected through my unmatched Units 3 & 4 student (click here to see our student results)

  • Fully recorded classes for unlimited revision, accessed via a one-stop learning portal

  • FREE outside-of-class marking where I provide detailed, thoughtful, and assessor-level feedback on your writing → receiving valuable feedback is crucial to do well in Eng Lang as EL is not black & white

    • Time spent marking each piece

      • Jason: I spend on average 30 minutes per writing piece, where I read through your work sentence by sentence & multiple times to understand your writing style and the strengths and improvement areas of your writing

      • Most other tutors: 5 minutes or less

    • Quality of feedback

      • Jason: Detailed and constructive. My feedback often totals more than 700+ words per piece, at times more than 1000 words (yes - the feedback itself alone), and it’s no surprise my students often make exponential improvements in their writing upon enrolling, with some going from Ds & Cs in Year 10 to As & A+s in Year 11 & 12. I do NOT give 2-3 sentences of generic comments (those are quite useless). I focus on what you did well + areas you can improve for every paragraph, giving my students the edge to outperform their peers – consistently

      • Jason: My feedback goes beyond simply highlighting areas done well or areas for improvement. Wherever possible, I provide tailored sample suggestions — often including model body paragraphs or media example analyses — to clearly demonstrate how responses can be refined and strengthened. Students consistently report that this approach has been very valuable to their progress, as it not only tells students ‘what’ to improve, but also ensures they know ‘how’ to improve it.

      • Most other tutors: lack detail & specificity, 2-3 sentences of generic comments, often rushed, based on templates, not personalised (which will unlikely help you to improve)

    • Fee for outside-of-class writing piece correction

      • Jason: FREE

      • Most other tutors: Expensive. Market rate for someone relative to my experience (6+ years) is ~$40 per writing piece; my students have told me some tutors ask students to book sessions that are $100+/hour if they just want to have a writing piece corrected

    • 7500+ tutoring hours

    • 500+ students tutored from 60+ schools across Victoria

    • This breadth of experience means I not only understand VCE Eng Lang inside-out, but I also recognise the specific areas where students commonly struggle—whether it’s breaking down dense metalanguage, structuring ACs/Essays under time pressure, or refining expression to match what VCAA assessors are looking for

    • Having supported students with a wide range of goals, from consolidating core skills to maximising performance, I know how to adapt my approach to each learner’s needs

    • Over the last 6+ years, this proven ability to deliver results has made me one of the most sought-after VCE English Language tutors in Victoria

      • One of my Melbourne High students achieved A+ across his SAQ, AC, and 2 Essay SACs - projected raw 50

      • Multiple students from Mac Rob averaged A+ in their SACs for U3 and U4 (including VH1s - highest band) - projected raw 45+s

      • Numerous other students ranked in the top 3-10 of their cohort @ schools like Suzanne Cory, Penleigh and Essendon Grammar School, John Monash Science School, Camberwell Girls Grammar and more (many with A+ SAC average)

  • Recommended by an experienced VCAA Eng Lang Assessor! (“Your comments are very insightful and marking spot-on. Your tutees are lucky to have you teaching & marking”) | No other EL tutors in Victoria have received such recognition (as far as I know). To see the recommendation, please click here

    • This means the tutoring program (the way I teach, materials, and feedback provided) is recognised and acknowledged by the VCAA Assessor. It also means I am able to make timely updates to the program to align with the latest VCAA requirements and ensure the tutoring program’s teaching is targeted at exactly what VCAA looks for! An unmatched offering.

    • Since EL is not a black and white subject (i.e., unlike maths and science where there is one set answer), students must know how to write in a way that aligns with what VCAA assessors look for in their marking – I know what that looks like and I can help you to master it!

  • Track record of improving students’ performance, with 80%+ of my students achieving an A+ SAC average and many ranked top 1 - 5 @ schools like The Mac.Robertson Girls' High School, Nossal High School, Melbourne High School, Suzanne Cory High School, Penleigh and Essendon Grammar School, Melbourne Girls Grammar, Genazzano FCJ College, Glen Waverley Secondary College, and so on

  • Tutored 500+ students from 60+ schools such as Mac Rob, Nossal High, Melbourne High, Suzanne Cory, Methodist Ladies' College, Melbourne Girls Grammar, Glen Waverley SC, Penleigh and Essendon Grammar School, Scotch College, John Monash Science School, Caulfield Grammar, Genazzano FCJ College, Balwyn High, Kew High, Vermont SC, University High and many more; meaning I know how to cater the tutoring to suit the unique learning styles of each student and I understand how schools design their SACs and can help you tackle and ace them

  • Full-time tutor, which means you receive my full and undivided attention. The amount of time and resources I invest in the program to provide you with the edge to succeed is unmatched by other tutors who may have University exams to worry about as their first priority. My students are my first priority.

    • I am the only tutor in Victoria (as far as I am aware) that:

      • Tutors VCE Eng Lang full-time - it’s my only job (not as a casual job or studying at Uni); AND

      • Specialises in tutoring only VCE Eng Lang; AND

      • Teaches all classes exclusively myself: AND

      • Answers all questions during & outside of class myself; AND

      • Marks every single writing piece myself, ensuring feedback is consistent, accurate, and high-quality

This means every part of your learning journey is handled by Jason directly — no shortcuts, no delegation, no compromises.

    • In contrast, many other Eng Lang tutors in the market:

      • Treat tutoring as a side job while studying intensive degrees such as Medicine, Engineering, Commerce, etc. With the amount of hard work that is required to get into those degrees, it’s likely they will be prioritising their Uni studies over tutoring, and Uni exams coincide with your VCE exam period —> this can directly affect the support they provide to you.

      • Delegate teaching to junior tutors who are new to tutoring and may lack the depth and experience to run classes effectively.

      • Delegate the marking of writing pieces to junior tutors who are new to tutoring, resulting in feedback that is often limited, inconsistent, and not aligned with what assessors are looking for.

      • Spread their focus across multiple domains (some may also tutor other VCE subjects, have another job, etc.), rather than specialising in VCE Eng Lang — meaning their attention is divided instead of fully centred on your success in VCE Eng Lang.

But, with Jason, you can be confident that all your teaching, support, and feedback come from an experienced full-time specialist whose sole focus is helping you succeed in VCE English Language.

  • Spot-on predictions on recent exams (SAQ, AC, and Essay), with practice on very similar & almost identical texts and topics

  • Meticulously designed & updated lesson notes, resources, and comprehensive guides, fully aligned with the NEW 2024–2028 study design requirements

    • I have spent countless hours redesigning the course material to ensure it’s aligned with the new Study Design. This means I’m well-equipped and familiar with the changes, and coupled with the unparalleled learning resources, I am more than ready to help you succeed

  • Presented engaging exam revision lectures to students from various schools across Victoria

The choice is clear, it’s certainly smarter to choose a tutor who dedicates all his time to Eng Lang and his students and has supported 500+ students to achieve the BEST results (click here to see the results) – year after year.

Program Delivery

How the classes are run

  • Effective small-group tutoring (**please see the section below on benefits of group tutoring**)

  • Comprehensive 1.5-hour lesson per week (often goes overtime at NO additional cost)

  • Grouped by students from the same school or schools with similar SAC styles

  • Conveniently delivered over Zoom (**please see below on the benefits of tutoring over Zoom**)

  • All materials easily accessed via a one-stop online learning portal (no last-minute document bombardments in a FB group chat – that is just chaotic !)

Benefits of group classes

English Language is not a black-and-white subject where there is just one right answer, meaning students find different perspectives super helpful, and the group setting makes it easy to share & bounce ideas with.

Students have found the following to be the main benefits of group classes:

  • Valuable perspectives: Students are able to discuss ideas with the group present so they can learn from each other, bounce off ideas, and listen to others’ perspectives; students often find this to be useful due to the NON black and white nature of VCE English Language

  • Peer collaboration: Students are grouped by the same/similar schools, which means they are able to form study groups and help out one another, especially during SACs and exams

  • Cost-effective: Many 1 on 1 tutors merely use the textbook or treat it as a consulting session, which usually leaves knowledge gaps or results in insufficient preparation; it is also more expensive to have more hours of 1 on 1 tutoring, usually $300+ per hour (for someone with similar experience as me) !

  • Structured curriculum: With a planned lesson schedule tailored to their school needs, students enjoy the structure and meticulousness group tutoring brings (which 1 on 1 tutoring lacks), allowing them to learn ahead of school progression – leaving ample time for SAC & exam preparation

Benefits of online learning

From the feedback I have received from 500+ students, many of them have told me that they prefer online learning for English Language. With 6+ years of experience in delivering online classes, I can assure you my classes are equally, if not more engaging than in-person classes. Weekly booklets, resources and recordings will be uploaded on our online learning portal for easy access.

Lessons on Zoom ultimately offer numerous benefits that are unavailable via in-person classes.

Students have found the following to be the main benefits of online learning:

  • Active learning & enhanced understanding: Through the share screen function, students are able to see me using the iPad & Apple Pencil to annotate the SAQs/ACs/Essays live. Students have found this to be highly engaging and a more active way to learn (this will be demonstrated in the trial lesson)

  • Revisit the lessons anytime, anywhere: All lessons are recorded on Zoom; students have said they found this incredibly helpful as they are able to catch up easily if a lesson is missed, and or revisit important concepts. This is not possible if classes are conducted in person at a local library.

  • Minimised travel time: With students having many SACs in Year 12 and how precious time is, online learning significantly reduces travel time, allowing students to spend more time studying and/ taking breaks from their studies, rather than wasting time and feeling tired from travelling on the road

  • Lessons start on time: We don’t have to worry about finding spaces at a library, which is often crowded. We also don’t need to worry about being told off for “ speaking too loudly”

  • Better and more efficient interaction: Apart from asking questions and sharing their work by unmuting their mic, students also have the option to private message me on Zoom with any questions they may have or work they would like to share with the rest of the class. They are also able to contribute more actively using this function, as it remains anonymous as to who “sent” the message (which means students are not prevented from voicing their opinions because of worrying what others may think, thus ensuring more active engagement). A LOT of students have found this to be beneficial

Will I still receive 1 on 1 individualised support?

Yes, absolutely!

Although I specialise in small group tutoring, I always provide individualised feedback and support to my students. If you are ever unsure or don’t understand any of the concepts, I can help you 1 on 1 (both in and after class) ! I am also able to answer any questions the students might have while tutoring to provide them with instant feedback during the session.

I provide 24/7 one-on-one support over social media and email (answering ANY questions you may have), as well as individualised and highly detailed feedback for any writing piece (at no additional cost, of course)

In simplest terms, with personalised support, interactive classes and peer collaboration; I guarantee to you that the online group environment will help you to learn more effectively and accelerate you learning in Eng Lang !

For the world-class & unmatched knowledge, experience, resources, and support that I provide, it may seem that the tutoring service would come at a premium, but fortunately, that’s not the case!

The fee for the Units 1 & 2 Eng Lang program – a program that will provide you with the knowledge, resources & motivation to enable you to excel in the most important subject in VCE (Eng Lang will always be in the top 4 for your ATAR) is $75 per week per student (GST exclusive). Discount available for bulk payments – please enquire.

I have NOT increased the fee for the 2026 U12 program — it’s exactly the same as what my Units 1 & 2 students from this year (2025) paid. With the large number of enrolments I’ve had for my U12 cohort in 2025 (and previous years), families consistently find the tutoring to be high-quality and well worth the investment. You can feel confident you’re making a great investment in your success- one that will yield a high return 😊

What is even better: you can attend a FREE trial class before you decide to enrol! During the trial lesson, I will cover (but not be limited to):

  • Insight into VCE English Language — what the subject is all about, and how it is different from VCE English Mainstream

  • A complete overview of the Units 1 & 2 course, highlighting the most important areas that carry over into Units 3 & 4 to give you a strong head start

  • Introduction to Metalanguage, SAQs, Analytical Commentaries, and Essays — what they are and examiner expectations

  • How my U12 program gives you a competitive advantage in the most important subject of your VCE journey

  • Proven strategies to set yourself up for success in VCE Eng Lang, sharing the habits my past Raw 50 students have used

  • How to find high-quality media examples for Section C (worth 40% of the exam — extremely critical). In 2025 alone, I provided my U34 students with over 150 curated media examples, which made a massive difference in their essays!

  • Writing piece feedback & 24/7 one-on-one support showcase … and much more!

Everything is designed to give you a head start on VCE Units 1 & 2 English Language — completely FREE, so there’s nothing to lose and everything to gain😊.

When it comes to tutoring, many other tutoring places may charge similar (or higher) fees, but what you actually receive can vary. Students are often taught by tutors with limited experience, have their class taught / work marked by someone other than the advertised ‘main tutor’, or face slower response times during peak SAC / Exam periods.

With Jason Huang, you receive exactly what is promised, including:

  • Specialises in tutoring VCE English Language only + full-time Eng Lang tutor

  • 6+ years of tutoring experience (7,500+ tutoring hours)

  • 500+ students tutored across 60+ schools in Victoria

  • Proven results: over 80% of students scoring 40+, with many achieving raw 48–50s and even Premier’s Awards

  • Rank #1 students at top schools, including Nossal High, Mac.Rob, Melbourne Girls Grammar, etc

  • Recommended by a VCAA English Language assessor for quality teaching and insightful & accurate feedback (extremely rare for tutors to receive such recognition)

  • All teaching, answering of questions, and marking done personally by Jason — no delegation, no compromises

  • And many more … (outlined above on the website)

I choose not to employ additional tutors because I believe every student deserves the highest standard of teaching and feedback. My focus is on delivering the most effective, personalised learning experience possible — and helping every student achieve their potential in VCE English Language.

Unlike most tutors who are only available to help during the lesson and hence charge “per hour”, I don’t charge per hour or per 1.5 hour lesson because my tutoring services are NOT limited to just the 1.5 hour lesson; it goes way beyond that (refer to the section ‘What You Will Receive in Jason’s U12 Eng Lang Program’ for the comprehensive suite of services I offer).

Most other tutors are not available to answer questions from students outside of class, or charge EXTRA if you want to have a writing piece marked (the market rate for someone with my experience (6+ years) is ~$40 per writing piece). My students have also told me some tutors ask students to book extra sessions that are $100+/hour if you just want to have a writing piece corrected😲(evidence available upon request). I think that’s SO unreasonable, especially considering VCE English Language is not a black and white subject, and personalised feedback is SO valuable. Unlike those tutors, I do not charge extra for them.

Every year, I always have a number of students who switch to my tutoring after attending other tutors earlier in the year (as they found their previous tutor unhelpful), and they tell me their only regret is not joining me sooner (evidence available upon request).

Make the right choice from the start – avoid regrets! I genuinely care about your success in Eng Lang, and my hundreds of 5-star student reviews (click here to read) attest to it.
